Terri Codlin, Secretary
Terri is a certified American Montessori Society teacher and was the lead primary teacher at First Presbyterian Montessori for 24 years. After her retirement from the classroom she was the receptionist at the Lafayette Society for Performing Arts. She now enjoys pursuing an interest in art and volunteering at Hillside Montessori LaGrange. She has served on the HML Board for 6 years and is currently secretary of the Board and Capital Campaign Chair.
Erik graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in History and Biology. At the same time, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army where he served as an active duty Field Artillery officer for 8 years. Erik then served as a Department of Defense Civilian with the Army and the Air Force for 6 years performing various international relations, education, and training roles with extensive travel in Europe and Israel. Erik currently serves in the Alabama National Guard and is a graduate of the Cavalry Leaders Course, Air Command and Staff College, and Command and General Staff College.
He fell in love with the Montessori Method after witnessing his own children thrive in Montessori communities. He obtained his Association Montessori International (AMI) Adolescent Studies certification at the Hershey Montessori School in Huntsburg, Ohio in 2014 and has two years Montessori experience as an adolescent director and lead teacher.
Dr. Jack Slay, Jr. , Vice President
Dr. Jack Slay Jr. was born in Oxford Mississippi, just feet and minutes from Faulkner’s daily walk. He picked up a couple English degrees from Mississippi State University and a PhD (in English) from the University of Tennessee and has worked at LaGrange College — as an English professor, a dean of students, and, most recently, as director of the Servant Scholars Program — for a bit over 25 years. He’s been with the Hillside Montessori board for 3 years. Occasionally, he writes stuff.
John Harrell, President
John Harrell graduated from Berry College with a degree in Industrial Technology and Manufacturing. After several years with Interface Flooring Systems John returned to school at LaGrange College to earn a degree in Religion and Philosophy. John is currently an employee of Twin Cedars Youth and Family Services, Inc. as a Performance Quality Improvement Specialist and Program Coordinator for The Children’s Advocacy Center of Troup County. John served as Board Chair for the LaGrange Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program in 2015 and 2016. John also chaired the Troup County Homeless Coalition as well as the coalition’s Think Tank. John is in his 6th year on the Hillside Montessori Board of Directors and is in his second year as President of the Board. John is a recent graduate of LaGrange College’s new Philanthropy and Development Graduate program. John and his wife of nearly 20 years, Diane, are both serving in their second term on LaGrange College’s Alumni Executive Board. Whether it’s a road trip to each of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s home sites, a trip to the Okefenokee Swamp or building a back yard tree house, John’s free time is spent with his family. John resides in LaGrange with his wife Diane and daughter Chloe.
Lauren is a native of Carrollton, Georgia. She is a gradute LaGrange College and majored Non-Profit Leadership with minors in Servant Leadership and Latin American Studies. She will complete her Masters in Philanthropy and Development in July 2019. Lauren previously worked as a fundraiser for Circles of Troup County. She was recognized as the Outstanding Non-Profit Leadership graduate at LaGrange College in May 2017 and was recognized in LaGrange Daily News’ Inaugural 20 under 40 issue summer 2018. Lauren enjoys traveling, visiting Hillside students and spending time outdoors.
Bethany Headrick, Head of School
Bethany’s love for learning and desire to create opportunities in her community lead her to form the steering committee that founded Hillside Montessori of LaGrange in 2011. Bethany holds a B.A. in English and M.A. in Teaching from LaGrange College along with Montessori certification from North American Montessori center. She is a graduate of the 2018 Leadership Troup class and was recently recognized as one of LaGrange’s 20 under 40. In addition to serving as Head of School for Hillside Montessori, she is on the Advisory Committee for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper/WPL Floating Classroom and serves on the Board of Directors for LaFayette Society for Performing Arts.
Mitch Key, Past President
Mitchell (“Mitch”) T. Key is a partner in the law firm of Key & Gordy, P.C. Mitch received a Bachelor of Arts in History from LaGrange College in 2004 and a Juris Doctor from Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 2007. Mitch generally practices in the areas of real estate law, probate law and business associations. Mitch is very active in the community. Mitch has served as Chairman of the Leadership Troup Board, President of the LaGrange College Leadership Council, and President of the Hillside Montessori Board. Mitch is married to Meredith Key and they have two sons, Porter and Booker, and a four-legged son, Beau.
Jeff Lukken, Treasurer
Jeff Lukken received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from University of Notre Dame and his law degree from the University of Georgia. He was the owner and President of Lukken Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in LaGrange, Georgia for 25 years and later became a partner in the law firm of Kirby, Roberts & Lukken, PC. Jeff served on the LaGrange City Council for 2 years and served as mayor of LaGrange for 16 years. Today, Jeff is the Director of the Wilkinson Family Servant Scholar Program and an assistant professor in political science at LaGrange College
