WHAT

Hillside Montessori of LaGrange, Inc is a non-tax funded elementary school committed to following the pedagogical standards developed by Dr. Maria Montessori while serving preschool students ages 3-6, and elementary and adolescent students in grades 1-8.

 WHY

The vision of a Montessori Elementary school has been alive in LaGrange for several years. Understandably, parents whose children thrive in the Toddler, Primary, and Extended Day programs at First Presbyterian Montessori School, which is now in its 33rd year of operation, want a similar environment for their children’s elementary education. We are excited that the opportunity is now available.

 WHO

The initial parent-teacher group that formed in support of this school began meeting in 2009, and was comprised of four individuals. As their enthusiasm grew, more parents volunteered their time and ideas, and an official steering committee was formed. The members of that steering committee –  Laura Fuller, Bethany Headrick, Pat Headrick, Stacey Malone, Melina Moyer, Melinda Pomeroy-Black, and Kristina Thurman – along with help from Oakgrove Montessori of Carrolton and DASH of LaGrange, created the strategic plan for the school. In June of this year our Board of Directors (see Board of Directors page) was formed.

 WHERE

Hillside Montessori of LaGrange, Inc is proud to reside in the convenient and well-maintained school building that formerly housed Unity Elementary School. Our Park Avenue location is in walking distance from both LaGrange College and LaGrange’s beautiful, historic downtown area.

A community need is met; seven years of cultivating lifelong learners.

2010 A group of four individuals whose children/grandchildren attended First Presbyterian Church Montessori met to discuss the possibility of a Montessori elementary school. After several months of pursuing the option of expanding the programs at FPC, the church decided that it was not an option and the group began pursuing other options.  An official steering committee of seven individuals was formed. That committee began the process of creating a new school.

July 7, 2011 Hillside Montessori of LaGrange, Inc. was incorporated with the State Of Georgia as an official 501(c)3 organization. The first Board of Directors was formed.

Spring 2012 HML found its first home in the Mitchell House at LaGrange College and hosted its first Open House and enrollment season.

August 2012 HML’s inaugural class of 12 students began school.

2013 Having outgrown The Mitchell House, HML moved to Advent Lutheran Church with 26 students and a new Upper Elementary program.

2014 Foreseeing the need for annual growth, HML leased the former Unity Elementary building from TCSS.

2015 HML divided into two separate classes, Lower and Upper Elementary.

2016 HML was named Small Business of the Year by the LaGrange Troup County Chamber of Commerce.

2017 HML added two new new programs, its Primary and Adolescent communities, and enrolled a record 58 students.

2018 HML announced plans to build a new school after acquiring five acres of land and receiving a $1.5 million grant from the Callaway Foundation.

The 2018-2019 academic year brought 70 students in four programs.
